Back in 2009, Nicola Hudson became the first apprentice to receive support from Realise. Here she talks about her full-circle journey and the impact Realise has had on her career.
I started PM Training in 2009 and I was actually part of the first Officeworks group. We spent 6 weeks on a training programme to help us gain skills. I got to grips with making telephone calls, becoming more confident and competent using computer software and more office related roles. It was a great taster into the world of work and what a business admin role could be like.
An opportunity quickly arose for me to get a potential business administration apprenticeship with local estate agents, Daniel & Hulme. I was delighted when this was made possible by Realise charity, who stepped in and provided the business with funding to help me get started.
Without this funding, I might not have been able to get that position and start my apprenticeship. It allowed me to progress and start my career, without it I may not be where I am today! That funding allowed me to learn everything I needed to progress my role with Daniel & Hulme. For 2 years I worked hard and was proud to come away with an NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration.

I then progressed and moved back to PM Training with a role in the learner services team. It was from there that I became the Officeworks Programme Manager which means I’m now responsible for the programme that I started on back in in 2009! It’s great to have come full-circle in my career.
I now see every day the support that Realise gives to young people and it makes me proud. Over the past 10 years, the support has grown, with young people now receiving driving lessons, workwear, toolkits and guidance on healthy eating and mental health.
